Technical information

Monolina was originally designed as part of the school assignment called Bestsellers at UMPRUM in Prague. The goal was to create a typeface that would intentionally become the biggest bestseller on MyFonts. Monolina did well in the rankings and became a breakthrough typeface for me. For the first time, I digitized a script typeface based on my handwriting.

Genuinely, I sketched Monolina with a ballpoint pen at an enlarged size. I chose a ballpoint pen that allows me to control the glyph curve perfectly and keeps the monolinear stroke with zero contrast. Also, it was a replacement for standard Speedball pens, available in the Czech Republic under the brand Redispero. These were firmly attached to the original Czechoslovak advertising letterings. Due to the nib's round shape, the strokes' starts and exits are perfectly rounded. Since I wanted to stay with the single linear concept, hence the name: one-line / mono-lina.

Monolina is highly stylized but retains its wild character, which stands out, especially in the larger sizes. It's brimming with four sets of crazy uppercase, swash figures, contextual lowercase and plenty of accented ligatures, together with all neccessary characters and all sorts of symbols. After ten years, I updated Monolina to meet up-to-date technical standards. I believe I’m going to draw much better single-line script typefaces, like Dash, but this one will always remind me of my student years!
